Today is the birthday, in 1720, of John Woolman, a Quaker activist and abolitionist who preached against slavery and economic injustice.
Today is also the birthday, in 1920, of “Dada,” or Pandurang Shastri Athavale, an Indian spiritual leader who popularized the study of the Bhagavad Gita and founded intentional communities based on self-study, selfless devotion, and the application of Hindu texts for economic and spiritual liberation.
Today is a feast day for Jerzy Popiełuszko, a Polish Roman Catholic priest who preached against authoritarianism in communist Poland and for the solidarity trade union. He was murdered by drowning by the regime on this day in 1984.
Reflection:
John Woolman wrote about the lure of wealth:
“I saw that an humble man, with the blessing of the Lord, might live on a little, and that where the heart was set on greatness, success in business did not satisfy the craving; but that commonly with an increase of wealth the desire of wealth increased. There was a care on my mind so to pass my time that nothing might hinder me from the most steady attention to the voice of the true Shepherd.”
and he tied the greed of capitalism to the sin of slavery and human trafficking:
“Though departing from the Truth as it is in Jesus, through introducing Ways of Life attended with unnecessary Expences, many Wants have arisen, the Minds of People have been employ'd in studying to get Wealth, and in this Pursuit, some departing from Equity, have retain'd a Profession of Religion; others have look'd at their Example, and thereby been stengthen'd to proceed further in the same Way: Thus many having encourag'd the Trade of taking Men from Africa and selling them as Slaves.”
Pandurang Shastri Athavale wrote:
It is my experience that awareness of the nearness of God and reverence for that power create reverence for self, reverence for the other, reverence for nature and reverence for all of creation.
and
Devotion as an expression of gratitude to God can turn into a social force and bring about transformative changes in all aspects of human life and at all levels of society.
Father Jerzy Popiełuszko said,
“It seems to me that in the history of the Church, in the history of Christianity, there are many examples showing to what extent you have to defend the Truth. You have to defend it to the end. Jesus Christ sacrificed His life in order to announce his Divine Truth. Likewise, the apostles sacrificed their lives. Therefore the role of the priest is to proclaim the Truth and suffer for the Truth…… If necessary, even to die for the truth. Such examples are plenty in Christianity, and from these examples we should draw conclusions for ourselves.”
Prayer: God of Truth, do not let us forget that truth always has a cost. Amen.
