Cyril and Methodius, and Inayat Khan

Today is the Feast Day of brothers Cyril and Methodius, “The Apostles to the Slavs,” who died in 869 and 885, respectively. They developed the alphabet that would eventually become Cyrillic, and is still used in many cultures today, and translated the Bible into Slavonic.

Today marks the birthday, in 1882, of Inayat Khan, a professor, musician, and promoter of Sufism in the West. His ecumenical Sufism continues to be broadly appealing to those looking for more mystical religion.

Reflection

“There are two aspects of individual harmony: the harmony between body and soul, and the harmony between individuals. All the tragedy in the world, in the individual and in the multitude, comes from lack of harmony. And harmony is the best given by producing harmony in one's own life. ”

“If people but knew their own religion, how tolerant they would become, and how free from any grudge against the religion of others.”

Prayer: God, we know you only imperfectly, and many of us do not even know our own religion. Forgive us for confusing the two, and for acting out of our ignorance. Amen.
