Vladimir Korolenko and Marielle Franco

Bolivia, 2007
Today is the birthday, in 1853, of Vladimir Korolenko, a Russian author and human rights advocate, who criticized equally the Tsarist and Bolshevik regimes. He was exiled multiple times for his outspoken criticism of the government, and was continually involved in famine relief efforts as well as publicizing government corruption.
Today is also the birthday, in 1979, of Marielle Franco, city councillor of Rio de Janero who was also an advocate against police brutality and for LGBTQ rights. She was assassinated by former policemen who had fascist associates in 2017.
Reflection:
Vladimir Korolenko wrote:
“People aren't angels woven of light, but neither are they beasts to be driven into stalls.”
and
“Violence feeds on submission like fire feeds on dry grass.”
Prayer: God, your merciful care toward the poor and marginalized are constantly opposed by the forces of bigotry, capitalism, and fascism. Raise up more leaders who will speak truth to power on behalf of those with little political power. Amen.
