Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Rosa Gonzalez

Rhinos at the San Francisco Zoo. 2007. Own photo.
Today marks the death, in 1834, of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, English poet, author, and theologian.
Today also marks the death, in 1981, of Rosa Gonzalez, a Puerto Rican nurse and activist who established the Board of Examiners in Nursing and advocated that the same respect be given to the nurses as to doctors.
Reflection:
“He who begins by loving Christianity more than Truth, will proceed by loving his sect or church better than Christianity, and end in loving himself better than all.”
Rosa Gonzalez wrote:
“To this day the ‘Medical Class’ has not accepted nurses who have the same goal as doctors: the well-being of the patient. Both professions need each other in order to be successful.”
Prayer: Holy One, prevent our religion from becoming a god, and social hierarchies from becoming our religion. Amen.
