Today is the feast day of Saint Timothy and Titus, two companions of Paul. The traditional date of Timothy’s death is the year 97. His mother and grandmother, Lois and Eunice, are mentioned in Paul’s writings as strong in the faith and good teachers.
On this day in 1564, Pope Pius IV ratified the decrees of the Council of Trent, making a sharp theological and sacramental distinction between Protestantism and Catholicism.
Today is the birthday of Bessie Coleman, in 1892, the first licensed African-American and Native American pilot.
Today also marks the birth of Bishop David Jenkins, in 1925. He was an outspoken critic of the free market ideology of Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher, and officiated one of the first same-sex marriages in the Church of England.
Reflection:
David Jenkins wrote:
“No statement about God is simply, literally true. God is far more than can be measured, described, defined in ordinary language, or pinned down to any particular happening.”
Bessie Coleman said to a reporter:
“The air is the only place free from prejudice.”
